Vaudevillian sketch show with a dark spin…
Delving into the classics, this sketch show from the dark and surreal minds of Next to Normal promises a riotously good time.
Double Whammy is a sketch show that brings the audience along for the ride to create ‘the ultimate genre’. With a nod to Vaudeville (including a silent comedy horror film) double act Next to Normal deliver a bit of everything from ballet to techno – all with irreverent silliness. Underlying these moments is a firm ambition to make these art forms more accessible, as well as to spread some joy.
Next to Normal is composed of Clare Scoltock and Liz Shearer. In 2013, Liz moved from Brisbane to London where she met Clare. They combined Clare’s comedy background with Liz’s classically trained voice to create new material. Double Whammy is their second sketch show.
Each sketch takes place in a completely different artistic landscape. They explore Ballet, Opera, Jazz, Shakespeare, a silent film, and finish with a very surreal techno number. Acting as hosts between sketches, Liz and Clare engage the audience throughout their quest to “create the ultimate genre.” Citing Monty Python, The Mighty Boosh, and Charlie Chaplin as influences, Next to Normal like to blend a classic double act style with surreal, anarchic elements from alternative comedy.
Following its run at the Brighton Fringe, Clare and Liz plan to tour Doubly Whammy in the UK and across Australia.
